Australian state may lose data from digital ‘dark ages’

The Australian state of South Australia says that electronic government records from the “digital dark ages” — the period between 1980 and 2000 — are at risk of being lost forever. Officials say computerized records from before 1980 and after 2000 are easily accessible. But due to degraded storage media (including — shudder! — floppy disks) and now obsolete and unavailable software, many of the dark ages records are quickly becoming impossible to access.
