Apple singles out Google with a specific dialog box in Safari that tries to TALK YOU OUT OF GOOGLE as your start page. If you change your start page to any other site, Safari simply changes the start page (as do all other major browsers). But if you change the start page to Google.com, a special dialog box comes up that says,

“Are you sure you want to switch your home page to Google search? You can do a Google search directly from Safari’s search field without going to Google’s webpage.”

The funny thing is, Google is a close partner of Apple’s. Another funny thing: Mac fans often maintain their good-vs-evil view of the world when thinking about the motives of Apple and Microsoft by inventing the best possible motives for Apple, and the worst for Microsoft. This blog entry leads to that of a self-described “Mac loving” blogger, who describes the anti-Google dialog box in Safari, but then says, “I’m certain Apple meant no harm in adding this prompt…” This reminds me of how viciously Apple bloggers attacked Microsoft when the company announced delays of Windows Vista, but then blogged about how wise and good it was for Apple delay Leopard.
