BlackBerry Tour emerges in Alltel livery for those non-Sprint, non-Verizon types

We’ve got to give the divested markets representing the hollow husk of what was once Alltel a lot of credit — they seem to be doing everything in their power to continue rocking. For proof of that, look no further than this — pretty solid evidence that there’s an Alltel-branded Tour coming down the pike. Assuming they can keep the price within reason, it’d make for a truly epic purchase on these fancy new one-year contracts they’ve moved to, would it not?

Mushroom Networks announces new wireless “Broadband Bonding” technology

Posted on 30 June 2009 by

Mushroom Networks has been in the “broadband bonding” business for quite a while now, but we’re guessing they’re going to find a few more fans with their new wireless broadband gear, which promises the fastest cellular-based internet connection to date. Like the company’s previous PortaBella device (pictured above, not exactly to scale), its new rig can combine up to four different cellular data cards into a single high-speed connection, but this one is fully portable (just over a pound) and, perhaps most importantly, it has an optional battery pack that’ll let you be truly mobile with it. That, Mushroom says, makes the device ideal for a whole range of applications that can be a bit tricky with a single modem, like mobile TV broadcasting or temporary offices set up in a disaster area. Unfortunately, there’s no word on pricing just yet, but it doesn’t exactly take much guesstimating to figure out that it’s likely not the most cost-effective solution around.

Elecom keeps things simple with U2H-TC410B wall socket USB hub

Posted on 30 June 2009 by

While there’s a place for USB hubs that double as a mousepad and calculator, it’s sometimes best to just keep things simple, which is what Elecom has thankfully done with its new U2H-TC410B “wall socket” USB hub. Contrary to what that name might suggest, however, this one doesn’t actually plug into a power outlet, but is instead designed to be mounted on a wall or the side of the desk and become a wall socket of sorts itself. Apart from that, it’s basically just your standard four-port USB 2.0 hub and, as you can see above, it’s available in your choice of black or white. Unfortunately, it’s not priced like a run-of-the-mill USB hub, with this one running a somewhat hefty $39.99.

Nokia 7510 comes to Rogers’ TalkSpot service

Posted on 30 June 2009 by

In North America, Rogers has a reputation for getting the most cool GSM handsets the quickest (that’s not the only reputation it has, but we won’t go there right this second) — but this is one case where T-Mobile USA beat ‘em to the punch by a mile. The Canadian carrier is adding the Nokia 7510 to its TalkSpot-compatible lineup, meaning you’ll be able to offload calls to WiFi when you’re within range of a hotspot and transfer seamlessly to and from GSM. There’s no 3G, but the colorful flip does come with changeable faceplates, a concealed secondary display, 2 megapixel camera with flash, and microSD expansion. Look for it for CAD $49.99 (about $43) on a three-year deal.

Sony placing PS3 slim manufacturing orders for delivery in July?

Posted on 30 June 2009 by

We haven’t heard much about the PS3 slim since E3, but that doesn’t mean it’s been entirely quiet out there — the hot rumor today is that Sony’s signed manufacturing agreements with both Foxconn and Pegatron to build the revised model in time for July delivery. That much we believe, since it’s been backed up by a couple different credible reports, but here’s where it gets totally insane: there’s a suggestion that the slim will be the last PS3 model of this generation, and that a next-gen console based on Sony’s motion controller is due in spring 2010. We don’t buy that at all, since the PS3 is just entering its prime and Sony was clear that the motion controller was for the existing console, so we think this rumor is getting garbled down the wire — it’s far more likely that the slim is being prepped for an August launch to coincide with those rumored price cuts, and that new PS3 bundles that include the motion controller are set to drop next year. That’s just our take on the matter, though — we’ll see how things shake out.

Sony patents new Cell-based PS2 emulator

Posted on 30 June 2009 by

At first glance, we thought this all sounded a little too familiar: as you know, some PS3s had software-based PS2 emulation way back in 2007. So it was a little bit of a surprise when Siliconera unearthed patent docs dated last December (and only published by the patent office late last week) for the technology to decode and recompile software written for the PS2′s Emotion Engine on the current device’s Cell Processor. There’s been some speculation that this functionality might be included in the rumored slim PS3 at some point — either in the form of support for your old school PS2 discs or for digital downloads. Who knows? You might be playing your old copy of Shrek: Super Party! on your PS3 sooner than you think.

There’ll be a BlackBerry Tour without a camera, too

Posted on 30 June 2009 by

Only the most buttoned-up, high-security businessfolk still require phones without cameras these days — and seeing how the BlackBerry Tour is destined to become the new de facto choice for buttoned-up, high-security businessfolk, it stands to reason that a cameraless version makes a whole lot of sense. Sure enough, it turns out that Verizon will be offering a non-cam version right alongside the regular Tour when it launches on the 12th, but don’t think of this as a great money-saving opportunity if you don’t snap a lot of photos — Big Red wants to charge the same $199.99 on contract for this one that they’re charging for the regular version. CIA operatives, though, have to be pretty stoked.

Wii MotionPlus impressions: it works, but so far the games aren’t worth the fuss

Posted on 30 June 2009 by

At first glance it’s a little difficult to understand the necessity of another motion-sensing add-on. What could possibly be inside this particular block of white plastic that’s not inside those other countless slabs of white plastic that Nintendo has already slathered on the Wii? Sure, we know in theory that the gyroscopes that MotionPlus provides allows the controller to truly orient itself in 3D space, instead of just sensing acceleration in various directions, and breaks some of that reliance on the sensor bar, but do those theoretical advances result in a true leap in gameplay? We tested it out with EA’s new MotionPlus-enabled Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 and Grand Slam Tennis — the first such titles on the market while we wait for Nintendo to get its own Wii Sports Resort in order — and we’d say the results are pretty inconclusive so far. Check out our full impressions after the break, along with enthralling videos of both games in action.

Major thanks to The Golf Club at Chelsea Piers for letting us test this out at their facilities, and to golf pros Herb and Marj for letting us waste some of their valuable time.
