Oh sure, there’s bound to be some protrusion when shoving a retro console into a gaming handheld, but inelegant styling was a way of life for Sega back in the mid-90s. Modder Chris Koopa has achieved the impossible by stuffing an Atari 2600 (or the important parts, anyway) along with 40 games into a hacked up Game Gear and enabling it to operate for nearly a full workday with just five AA batteries. And yeah, there’s totally a 2600 cartridge slot to allow for playback of original titles. You know you’re oddly interested in seeing more, so tap the read link for a few shots from the rear / side.

Most would-be iPhone 3G unlockers are impatiently waiting for an easy software solution that’s been in the works since release day, but in some parts of the world, entrepreneurs are taking matters into their own hands. Enter Vietnam’s Tuan Anh Do, who employs a team of some 30 technicians diligently tearing iPhones and iPhone 3Gs apart to remove the baseband chips, reprogram them, and solder them back into place at a charge of about $80. Considering that the end result is a totally carrier-unlocked device, the cost could be perceived as reasonable by some Vietnamese who desperately want an iPhone on the domestic carrier of their choice — but there’s the ever-present risk of re-locking, which 2.2 conveniently does. Of course, that just means more business for Do, who charges another $50 to unlock re-locked handsets. All told, probably not a business model Apple would approve of — but it’s pretty awesome that a single handset has given rise to an entire cottage industry.

Remember that white Sega Game Gear that you always read about — maybe even saw in a picture — but never managed to actually find in real life? In the minds of average Game Gear owners, it reached near-legendary status; it didn’t matter that the white wasn’t necessarily any better-looking than the black, the sheer rarity of the darned thing made it an object of pure, unadulterated lust. Yeah, well, that’s pretty much where we are with the white Touch Diamond right now — we know it exists, but finding one is nigh impossible, and that alone makes it a thousand shades of awesome as far as we’re concerned. Taiwanese site ePrice has some hands-on shots up and we think we’re loving the look of the prism effect in the new color along with the two-tone action up front; yes, we’d like to see it launch everywhere, but a certain (perhaps nostalgic) part of us wants it to stay impossibly rare.

Okay, remember that bit about waiting for a wide release? Yeah, screw that noise. Firmware 4.7.0.75 for the BlackBerry Storm has drizzled out onto the interwebs, and initial reports from intrepid updaters seem to be generally positive. We can’t verify the authenticity of this sucker, but if you were counting down the minutes until RIM got around to patching up issues and killing some lag, 75 might be a good start. Good luck, friends.

Hey you, hot-shot movie cutter! Now that we’ve got your attention, have a look at this. Adobe‘s research laboratory has been toiling away with a sophisticated interactive video-object manipulation system, which gives video editors all sorts of creative windows with next to no rendering lag. An After Effects demonstration shows an editor selecting the outside of a cab and typing “taxi” — once the text is imprinted on the vehicle, it stays on the car as it moves up and down the street. We know, you’re totally scratching your head trying to envision what we just said, so why not just head past the break and give it a look?

The good news is that one of those rumored imminent firmware updates for Verizon’s Storm has just materialized — the bad news, though, is that it’s not available to the unwashed masses just yet. For now, the only way to get version 4.7.0.107 (compared to the 4.7.0.65 launch build) is to have a super on-the-ball BES admin who’s pushed the update out to his / her Storm users; non-BES users are still in the dark, but we’re hearing those folks (read: the overwhelming majority) should get it within a week or two. Let’s hope, eh?

Love UIQ? Well, bless your heart; we’re sorry for your recent loss. We’re also sorry that you have to see this, the best picture gallery we’ve seen yet of Sony Ericsson’s doomed Paris — a phone that would’ve undoubtedly been the ultimate execution of UIQ and the very top model in the company’s line (X1 possibly excepted, depending on your point of view) had it not been unceremoniously cut down before its prime. We take some comfort in knowing that enough prototypes made it out into the wild for high-quality pictures to show up, but for most of us, this is as close as we’re ever going to get.

A tradeshow to call its own, Nokia World kicks off this week in Barcelona — and while it’s expected to mostly be a way for developers to get out of their windowless offices for a couple minutes and connect with like-minded folks, a countdown timer has appeared on Nokia’s European and Middle Eastern / African sites that suggests something bigger is afoot. New handsets, accessories, or initiatives? We’re hoping for the first choice there — because you know, Nokia, we haven’t seen any Nseries devices running S60 5.0 yet. Hint, hint.
