NTT DoCoMo posts 41% profit increase on reduced handset subsidies

Go ‘head with your bad self, NTT DoCoMo. Party on down ’til six in the morning, because you just posted a quarterly profit increase of 41%. What’s to thank for such a remarkable boost? According to a Bloomberg report, the outfit’s decision to “reduce handset subsidies to customers” enabled it to bring in more cash despite the fact that sales fell 1.1% in the same quarter. President Ryuji Yamada proclaimed that the “acceptance of the monthly handset payment plan by our users helped bolster profits in the quarter,” and he also highlighted a “considerable decline in the cancellation ratio.” Still, some analysts are uncertain if the telecom company can maintain the growth, with Deutsche Bank AG’s Kenji Nishimura stating that the “increase in profit was merely caused by the change in the accounting.” Snap DoCoMo, are you just going to take that?

Ridax first company to overprice Phone 3G charging adapter

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

Although the 30-pin Dock connector in the iPhone 3G looks the same as it has since it was introduced in the 2G iPod, it’s different in one important (and maddening) way — it doesn’t support charging the older FireWire charging pins, only the newer USB method. That means a whole host of older chargers and docks don’t work with the iPhone 3G — and it also means that we’ll be seeing a lot of adapters like this one from Ridax make the scene. Hopefully other manufacturers won’t see fit to charge a whopping $40 for two connectors and a resistor like Ridax, but if you’re desperate enough to drop two Jacksons on this thing, you’ll also be able to charge through the built-in mini-USB connector on the side. We’ll wait, though — we expect to see some cheaper, smaller options on the table by the time this thing ships in September.

Mark/Space offers up Missing Sync for Symbian

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

Just over a month after surfacing in Preview form, Mark/Space has loosed the finalized version of The Missing Sync for Symbian on the world. Yes, Mac lovers, this means you can now get your beloved computer to play nice with your Sony Ericsson, Motorola or Nokia-based S60 / UIQ handset. There’s even a swank Proximity Syncing feature that enables your mobile and Mac to exchange hellos (and sync, obviously) whenever they are within Bluetooth (around 30-feet) range. The download is available now for $39.95, while packs with more licenses are available for $169.79 and up. Who’s game to give it a go and confess whether or not it was worth the coin?

Microwave process could cut cost of lithium-ion batteries

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

Filed under:

While there’s plenty of folks out there focused on making lithium-ion batteries safer and longer-lasting, there’s also thankfully some dedicated to making ‘em cheaper, which is especially welcome when we’re talking about the expensive batteries powering cars. Among those in the latter camp is University of Texas at Austin professor Arumugam Manthiram, who has devised a method of using microwaves to heat a concoction of commercially available chemicals, which ultimately results in the Rorschach test of rod-shaped particles of lithium iron phosphate pictured above. While the use of lithium iron phosphate instead of the more commonly used lithium cobalt oxide apparently cuts back on the total amount of energy the batteries can store, it is apparently particularly well-suited to delivering large bursts of power, which should make the batteries ideal for use in hybrid vehicles. What’s more, while the actual cost of the materials may not be much cheaper than other solutions, the sheer speed at which Manthiram’s process works could allow for higher production rates from the same amount of equipment, which should result in cheaper batteries by the time they roll off the assembly line.

Every Neonode N2 recalled due to reception problems

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

Filed under:

Hey, you remember the Neonode N2? The OG full-face touchscreen phone? Well, better cherish those memories, since every N2 is being recalled due to “reception problems.” A fix is apparently ready to go, but seeing as we haven’t heard a peep from Neonode since it promised us a totally new OS and handsets back at CES, we’ve got a feeling you might be better off swapping out handsets for a while — besides, who still uses EDGE?

T-Mobile 3G service coming October 1 to 27 markets

T-Mobile 3G

We were already pretty sure this would be happening, but it’s looking real now, if 8.5 x 11-inch pieces of paper taped to windows is any indication: T-Mobile is rolling out its 3G service on October 1 to 27 select cities. The above poster was spotted by TmoNews “outside a meeting” and, as you can see, it says, “10.1.08 3G is Coming.” As far as those launch cities, we have a handy little list for you after the break. By the way, it’s entirely possible T-Mobile 3G is already live in your market, though, so don’t let this confuse you too much. It could just mean you’re next, or, at least by October 1.

Verizon shows Blitz

Posted on 30 July 2008 by

Remember this? Yep, it popped up a while back as the uncreatively-named UTStarcom TXT8010, but never managed to launch on any US carrier — a shame, considering the low price point (theoretically, anyway) and the somewhat trick look and form factor. It’s all good, though, because Verizon has picked it up as the “Blitz” with a Wal-Mart launch on August 8 followed by Best Buy on September 28. Its main lease in life will be as an INpulse prepaid ‘set — so you know it’ll be nice and cheap — but it’s still going to manage to eke out VCAST Music support, a microSD slot with support up to 4GB, stereo Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel cam, and VZ Navigator. And what’s this, a default Verizon UI in orange? Are our weary eyes deceiving us?
