60GB Xbox 360 now shipping from Amazon

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

A few 60GB Xbox 360s may have already slipped out to retailers (as evidenced above), but if you’re not interested in running around trying to track one down, you can now snag one from Amazon and rest assured that it’ll ship out post haste. If you’ve been following this SKU’s every move, you’ll notice that’s a few days ahead of the August 4th date that Amazon once listed, and the August 6th date that Circuit City still does — but hey, we’re not complaining.

[Thanks, Michael]

LG licenses Dolby Mobile technologies

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

Even the best music phones aren’t typically pegged as audiophile-friendly powerhouses — and actually, they’re still not going to be, but the infusion of a little Dolby tech into LG’s lineup might grease things up a bit, anyway. LG has announced that it’s the very first manufacturer to license Dolby’s suite of audio processing products for the mobile world, a suite that includes surround sound, bass and high-frequency enhancement, volume leveling, graphic equalization by content type, and a magical mono-to-stereo converter — nothing really revolutionary, but the Dolby name carries a lot of weight, and it’ll be good to see phone makers consulting with some legit audio experts to help improve the experience. The first Dolby Mobile products from LG should reach the market in the fourth quarter of this year.

Fido offers up Motorola’s MOTOROKR U9

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

Merely hours after Motorola began selling its simplistic U9 through its own webstore, along comes Fido to give interested Canadians another option for procuring it. Starting right now, those enamored by that ghostly external display can grab one for just $75 on a 3-year contract, $175 with a 2-year agreement or a grossly overpriced $350 with no strings attached. Any takers… anyone?

AT&T takes wraps off Text Accessibility Plan for iPhone 3G, price hike included at no extra charge

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

Just like the original, AT&T now has a so-called TAP (Text Accessibility Plan) all set up for the iPhone 3G that’ll offer unlimited messaging and data to folks with disabilities. Interested parties do need to fill out a qualification form, meaning that your average able-bodied customer isn’t going to be able to get in on the service — and unfortunately, it’s undergone the same $10 facelift that the regular plans have suffered, meaning subscribers will now be paying $50 a month ($65 for enterprise use) instead of the $40 that was being charged previously. By the way, we’re shaking our fists at the heavens right now, cursing inflation, market forces, and corporate greed.

Video: Camera-based concept turns any surface into a DJ deck

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

Filed under:

DJ MoCAP, master of time and white space, has developed a camera-based controller for the TRAKTOR Scratch DJ System. Just sketch the deck onto a piece of white paper and turn any high contrast surface into a mixing table. There seems to be a bit of latency but overall the system looks fairly responsive. Why? Why not, we say. Video demonstration after the break.

[Thanks, Brian]

Samsung’s Soulb (U800) gets dressed in pink

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

After Samsung took the official wraps off of the Soulb in May (or U800, as it were), we didn’t hear much else about it… until now. Reportedly, Phones4U — well known for its pinking of handsets — has decided to offer up the Soulful candybar in none other than metallic pink. Specs wise, everything remains the same, with the mobile packing HSDPA connectivity, a 3-megapixel camera and 1GB of internal memory, but £10 ($19.77) from every one purchased will be funneled to the very worthwhile fight against breast cancer.

Sony begins accepting PlayStation Home beta applications

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

After a long long delay from that March 2007 announcement, Sony Japan just opened its doors to applications for the closed beta testing of PlayStation Home. Sony expects to drop 10,000 gamers (18 years old and up) into the virtual world when it launches in beta sometime in late August. Closed beta tests are due in other markets (er hem, the US) at about the same time with an open beta coming sometime later in the year. Lucky beta testers will be able to explore the 3D world and play games like PacMan in the Namco Museum, both of which are pictured after the break.

N2 recall leaves Neonode reeling, pleading for patience

Posted on 31 July 2008 by

From the outside, it has been easy to assume that everything was humming along nicely at Neonode‘s California / Sweden-based offices. Based on a recent open letter issued by the interim CEO and chairman Per Bystedt (not to mention the earnings report), that is indeed not at all the case. Neonode has failed at meeting guidance and anticipated sales for this year, with a number of things partially to blame. For starters, it admittedly tried to enter “too many markets, too fast,” and a recall of the N2 surrounding “reception issues” didn’t make things any better. Bystedt confessed to having just south of $3 million of his own money invested in the outfit, while he asked for other shareholders to be patient as he attempted to right the ship. Best of luck to ya — we hear it’s a pretty tough sector. [Warning: PDF read link]
