Sure enough, that 100 quid laptop we heard about early last week is already making the rounds, as the BBC caught up with the ONE at The Education Show in Birmingham, England. Granted, this thing is far from stylish (okay, so it’s downright ugly), but it’s hard to expect too much more given the ultra-low price tag. Satisfy your curiosity by checking out a minute long clip of the unit in action — go on, it’s right there in the read link.
[Thanks, KC]

Well, it looks like the aggressively priced unlimited action really didn’t come a moment too soon. We’re no economists here, but it doesn’t take rocket science, a Ph.D., collegiate level maths, or even a fancy calculator to crunch the cold, hard numbers coming out of Sprint Nextel’s fourth quarter earnings call. For starters, the number three carrier in the US reported a net loss of nearly $29.5 billion, which — get this — is more than the combined value of its outstanding stock. Let us reiterate for emphasis and drama value: Sprint lost more money in the fourth quarter of 2007 than the company is worth. Wow. If it’s any consolation, the staggering figure is largely due to a $29.7 billion write-down of Nextel’s value, which as the Wall Street Journal lays out, makes the 2005 merger officially a “Deal From Hell.” With postpaid subscribers continuing to migrate to other carriers, there’s no telling how to stop the hemorrhaging — especially if the fresh $99 unlimited plan doesn’t end up doing the trick — but something tells us the move to Kansas isn’t going to magically patch it all up.

We certainly can’t give Xero Mobile credit for launching any actual product — because they haven’t — but we’re all about giving credit where credit is due, and in Xero’s case, we’ve gotta hand it to ‘em for continuing the magnificent vaporware parade for as long as they have. It’s now been nearly 14 months since the ad revenue-supported MVNO had originally claimed to be targeting a launch, and as far as we can tell, they’re still doing something behind the scenes; that “something” may have absolutely nothing to do with actually launching, but hey, announcing partnerships and potential acquisitions must pay the bills, we suppose. Speaking of potential acquisitions, suitor ROK Entertainment has unceremoniously dropped its bid this week without giving any rhyme or reason, leading us to wonder where this leaves Xero’s liquidity — do they have enough money to continue trying to sell themselves, let alone launch an MVNO?

This one has been in the works for a while, but it looks like you can finally pick up your very own region-free enabler for the Wii for $19.99. Wii FreeLoader allows you to play any GameCube or Wii game from any region on your Wii. You just stick the FreeLoader disc into the console, let it spin up, eject the disc and stick in your title of choice — like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, for instance, or some cooking-related title. Since there’s no hardware modding required, this one theoretically won’t void your warranty, but who’s to say how Nintendo will treat you if you somehow break your Wii with it, and there’s always the fear that Nintendo will hit your Wii with a mandatory software update that breaks FreeLoader, so proceed with caution. Or don’t, so much confusing entertainment awaits you!

Check yourself before you wreck yourself, fools, because Verizon’s most expensive BroadbandAccess data plan is about to get a whole lot less unlimited. Yes, true, there’s already a 5GB soft cap on the current plan — but the worst that’ll happen to a chronic violator is a throttled download speed or a termination of the contract. Starting March 2, the best plan offered by the carrier will truly not be unlimited in any sense of the word, to the tune of 49 cents per MB. Yep, that’s the overage charge users will pay for busting past that 5GB cap, so use all due caution there. What’s a guy got to do to get some truly limitless 3G these days?

I told you January 2, 2007, and August 9, 2007, about an upcoming Mike Myers comedy called “The Love Guru,” in which Myers plays an American left at the gates of an ashram in India who returns to America to work, disastously, as a relationship guru. Now, here comes the HIGH-DEF TRAILER!

While we chew on that incoming Metal Gear Solid 4 80GB PS3 (with DualShock 3) in the States, Europe has a pair of SKUs of its own to look forward to. Sony’s hitting with a “movie bundle” on March 19th that includes Spider-Man 3, 300 and Casino Royale on Blu-ray, along with a 40GB PS3, all for the regular €399 price. If you can wait until March 29th, for the same price you can nab a 40 gigger bundled with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. Both bundles promise to be quite appealing, but apparently neither come packing HD cables, which could be a bit of a hangup for those ready to make the Blu-ray plunge. GT5 box art is after the break.
