iPhone stress test: how did it do?

Posted on 30 June 2007 by

The Internets are a cruel place when it comes to first generation uber-hyped gear. So goes the iPhone stress test conducted by PC World. Now, how do you think that 3.5-inch sheet of glass stacked onto a slim 11.6-mm chassis held up? Well, in tests which found the iPhone in a 30 to 40 rep shake ‘n bake with a bag full of key chains; on the business end of a deliberate cold-steel scratch attempt on the display; and dropped to concrete at heights (note plural) of up to about 6-feet, it came away with just a few scuffs along the metal edge. Right, no damage to the display. Be sure to check all the behind-split-finger gore in their video.

HTC’s BH M200 on display at FCC

Posted on 30 June 2007 by

Well hello there Mr. HTC Bluetooth headset, how nice to meet you. Courtesy of the FCC, the (surprisingly glamorously photographed) 15-gram BH M200 slug is unveiled as a followup to their M100 headset and brings along a Bluetooth 2.0 radio with up to 8 hours typical talk time or 360 hours of standby thanks to a Lithium Polymer 2 hour rechargeable. It also packs a sporty lanyard to keep the nerd factor low between calls. No idea when or even if this will land Stateside but it sure looks promising now. Lanyard illustration after the break.

[Thanks, Aaron R.]

Biopong enables workouts whilst gaming

Posted on 30 June 2007 by

If setting up your computer to play Pong with itself was beginning to incite a bit of jealously, fret not, as a recent project over at Teckjunkie can enable you to experience the famed title in an entirely new way. Aptly dubbed Biopong, this DIY endeavor relied on quite a bit of electrical engineering knowledge, a kit from ThinkGeek, and a steady flow of blood to your extremities. The rules are simple: flex either arm in order to interact with the game, and the uber-coordinated set may even be able to lift a few weights whilst gaming it up. Be sure to peep the video of this Wii exercise alternative after the jump.

Helio pits Apple’s iPhone against Ocean

Posted on 30 June 2007 by

Let’s face it, the comparisons between (insert phone here) and Apple’s handset began long ago, and now that the thing is actually in customers’ hands, the potshots are likely to start flying at mach speed. Enter Helio, who has already felt it necessary to create a comparison chart essentially showing off the areas in which the Ocean is stronger (or at least more attractive) than the iPhone. Quite frankly, the chart does make a few good points, most notably around the iPhone’s lack of GPS, strangely omitted MMS ability, and the obligatory removable battery; of course, we personally aren’t offended nor joyous about “MySpace integration,” but we suppose it could sway some folks tweens one way or another. We know you’re anxious to see just what Helio has to say about the strong competition, and while the chart doesn’t seem quite as hostile as the apparently bitter Helio salesman we ran into earlier today, be sure to give it a read after the break.

iPhone stock update: go get ‘em

Posted on 30 June 2007 by

Wanna know if you still have time to get an iPhone? Get your car warmed up, because most West coasters only have about a half an hour left — but the good news is every store we called still has stock (and not for lack of demand). Hell, every store everywhere pretty much has stock, and we also checked all fifty states in the union — not one showed the little red out-of-stock dot.

LA – has stock
New York 5th Ave (still open) – has stock
Palo Alto (University) – has stock, 4GB stock only
San Diego – has stock
Seattle – has stock
San Francisco – has stock

The Jasper Keynote RF green laser pointer: Powerpoint or Astronomy, you choose

Posted on 30 June 2007 by

Filed under:

If you’ve been waiting around for the world’s first green laser with RF Powerpoint slide-control then today’s your lucky day. Sure, sissies will get by with their weak sauce red laser pointers, but any self-respecting he-C-leveler knows that green lasers — some 50 times stronger than red — are where the real action is. In fact, Jasper say it’s so strong that it’s “ideal for astronomy use.” See little Billy, right there… that’s the cheese I was telling ya about. Ok, ok, we know how sky pointers work, but still. $169 with USB receiving device right in the box.
