HTC releases official update for AT&T 8525

Don’t get your hopes up, it’s not Windows Mobile 6 or anything cool like that, but HTC and AT&T have thrown 8525 owners a bone today with the official release of an expected (albeit a tad late) firmware upgrade. HTC’s page for the update is about as vague as it could possibly be without totally concealing the fact that it is, in fact, an update — but we’ve heard through other sources that it should offer up a functional push-to-talk button, miscellaneous bug fixes from the 8525′s original firmware, and that love-it-or-hate-it AT&T branding. Can’t have your flagship smart device dressed up in outdated branding, now can you?

Handheld Gadget Predicts Heat Stroke

Posted on 30 April 2007 by

Romteck has created a tiny, collapsible weather station that functions as a HEAT STRESS MONITOR. You can set it up anywhere in hot locations — Iraq during summer, Death Valley during summer, HP during shareholder’s meetings — and the device will tell you when it’s too hot to be there. It’s far superior than a thermometer, which measures only temperature. The Romteck Heat Stress Monitor also factors in humidity and air flow.

Your average inkjet can now print Super 8 / 16mm film

Posted on 30 April 2007 by

No doubt about it, vanilla inkjets seem to be garnering a whole lot of attention these days, and while the latest trick won’t yield circuits or OLED displays, it could make filmmakers who long for days past quite excited. Jesse England has apparently discovered a fairly easy to automate process to print video frames onto transparency film. After discovering the dimensions for both Super 8 and 16-millimeter film, he simply made a template, arranged the filmstrip using Adobe’s Premier and Photoshop, and printed it out on an everyday Epson inkjet. The noticeably manual task of punching out sprocket holes was still left to a hand-powered box cutter, but we’re sure there are less tedious solutions just waiting to be implemented. As expected, the actual video quality was deemed “terrible,” but the emotional impact was bittersweet indeed. Be sure to hit the read link for the whole low-down and to see a couple of video demonstrations to show you what the fuss is all about.

MOTOKRZR K1 in champagne gold is shipping

Posted on 30 April 2007 by

While there is nothing new to report on the gilded K1, we’re hearing that the newest in the KRZR add-a-new-color family is available in Taiwan and Singapore for a piddling 300 bones. If you are truly inspired to get your hands on one of these, we have a couple options to help you out: check eBay and either grab the real deal (yes, we saw them there too) or shell out a few dollars for a “Gold faceplate housing for Motorola K1 KRZR krazr HOT” or equivalent. We would tell you to wait ’til they end up here, but as we mentioned a couple days ago, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards this time around.

SMS m500 watch phone gets FCC approval

Posted on 30 April 2007 by

Brought to you by the same folks crafting the m300, the m500 watch phone has just passed through the FCC, giving it an air of legitimacy that its predecessor may have been lacking. Of course, there’s still a wide gap between FCC approval and making an appearance on store shelves — but we’re cautiously hopeful. Differences between the m500 and the earlier m300 look to be mostly cosmetic, with all buttons now having been moved to the sides to make room for a larger display up front. Now, we want to know: who’d put this on their wrists day in and day out?

SIXAXIS, Linux, robot… we’re in.

Yeah, Wiimotes aren’t the only motion-sensing game controllers that can be hacked for fruitless new uses. Take the new SIXAXIS Linux integration project, which, so far as we can tell, is an incredibly effective means for maneuvering small, custom robots in need of a good 3D controller for manipulating, um, a small flat plane. We have a feeling this won’t be the last we’ve heard of this little project. Video after the break.
