Hands-on with the i-mate Momento 70

Posted on 26 February 2007 by

Thrown together by well-traveled ODM Inventec, i-mate’s new Momento series of digital picture frames break some important ground. First of all, they do WiFi — a seemingly obvious feature for this category of devices that’s inexplicably missing from a majority of the mainstream models currently in the marketplace. Next up, the Momento is among the very first commercially available devices to support Microsoft’s SideShow concept for secondary displays that should (theoretically, anyway) untether all manner of information from the PCs on which it typically resides. In that respect, the Momento is very much a first-generation device — but as a picture frame, we came into the hands-on expecting a certain level of refinement, now that they’ve had a few years to ripen on the vine. Does the unit deliver on its promise as a highly connected, Vista-compatible accessory? Does it deliver as a plain ol’ frame, for that matter? We took the $200 Momento 70 — the smaller of the two, clocking in at 7 inches of diagonal real estate — for a test drive to get some answers.

Robots Choose iTunes Over Pirated Music…

Posted on 24 February 2007 by knologies

Not! Swiss eggheads at the University of Fèdèrale de Lausanne have invented swarming robots that communicate and evolve. When given the choice, for example, between pirated, illegally downloaded music, or those purchased legally through iTunes, five out of six robots choose iTunes. At least that’s what a video demonstrating the research appears to show. In the video, robots choose “food” over “poison,” communicate the preference and evolve. But “food” is represented by the Apple logo, for some reason, and “poison” by the universal symbol of piracy — the skull and crossbones. Sure, the researcher is interesting — but not nearly as funny as their unintentional Apple ad! Also interesting is that in a press photo promoting the research, the Apple logo has been doctored (the bite is removed). Here comes the VIDEO!

Black iMacs Coming Soon?

Rumor has it that Apple might be coming out with black 24″ (possibly 20″ too) iMacs starting next month. MacScoop has recently obtained this piece of information from an undisclosed source.

Looking at how the company has been putting out black versions of some of its products, such as iPods and MacBooks, it’s no wonder if this little rumor turns out to be real.

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ & 3800+

AMD Introduces Low-Power Chips: Athlon 64 3500+ And 3800+

Posted on 21 February 2007 by knologies

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ & 3800+

Looking for energy-efficient chips? Forget Intel’s Core 2 Duos, AMD’s new Athlon 64 3500+ and 3800+ draw only 45 watts of power (vs. Intel’s 65 watts) and are based on 65nm technology. If all you want is a quiet and energy-saving computer, you shouldn’t be bothered by the chips being single-core.

The chips are available immediately and from vendors such as Alienware, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Systemax, and Voodoo. The 3500+ will go for US$88, and the 3800+ for US$93.

Customizing Your MacBook’s Glowing Apple Logo

Various custom Apple logos.

For just $4 and a little work on your part, you can make your MacBook/PowerBook/iBook’s Apple logo stand out amongst a crowd of Apple fanboys.

iColours.ca is selling colored sheets that you can put over the Apple logo to customize it into a variety of colors and designs. The tricky part is the installation, which can be a daunting task and voids your product’s warranty at the same time. But it’s all worth it!

You can also submit your own design, which ups the cost to $9.99 for each insert.
